Yes, yes, getting up in arms about "I loves mah gun, you're a communist" every time there's a tragedy is ridiculous. Additionally, it's ignorant to be lulled into a sense of security simply by having a gun. But equally ignorant is being fooled into believing that stiffer gun control laws would suddenly solve the problem and make you safer. Timothy McVeigh used fertilizer. FERTILIZER.
And "despicable" is the word I would use to describe both sides of this argument. Always so ready to use tragedy to further one's own agenda. "OH SHIT, Some kids got murdered? Time to bolster my shaky campaign and parrot the same nonsense, but LOUDER NOW!!!!"
The fact is, we're not looking for the real problem. The conservatives are too frightened of losing their guns. The liberals are too satisfied with "Guns did it." If, in America, we somehow managed to ban all guns tomorrow.... do you really think this would be retroactive? Would the guns that criminals possess use their keen intellects to disintegrate, rather than be used illegally? If I put my gun down on the desk and say "KILL" will it do what I command? No.
But wait, wait, wait.... gun control stops all crimes everywhere doesn't it? That's why London is more dangerous than New York, right? I'm devastated that all those children were killed, but when are these parroting morons going to wake up, stop using tragedy to further their own agenda and focus on social uplift of our citizens rather than banning the inanimate? The war on guns in the U.S. would be a bigger failure than the war on drugs. The guns didn't commit the crime in NewTown, one disturbed young man did physically... but in reality, all the people who failed to give him the help he needed along the way leading up to this caused the crime.
Don't be so rigid. Don't be so easily satisfied. Something is killing our youth in record numbers, and I can assure you it's not our "gun culture." The war on drugs isn't a massive failure because of our "drug culture," is it? Portugal decriminalized all illicit drugs, and started treating drug addiction as a public health issue instead of a crime... and guess what, drug addiction and drug related deaths are down. So, we need to find equally effective ways to help the victims of our culture. Yes, "ways" there is not possibly ONE solution to so large a problem.
We are, as a group, at the most pathetic I have ever seen. The gun nuts run for cover. The anti-gun nuts use tragedy to further their own agenda. The media focuses on a murderer. The victims go unsung.
To quote one of my all time favorites, Samuel L. Jackson, (Sorry, Samuel, please don't put your boot up my ass) "WAKE THE FUCK UP!!"
